Smart door lock! It clamps on without drilling, is accessible from both sides of the door, and may be disengaged entirely once kids are in bed. Unlike conventional doorknob locks, it's placed high out of reach, foiling little Houdinis who can outwit standard safety locks. Plus, it doubles as a door pinch guard, protecting chubby fingers. Works, but probably only for a few

About Me First Time Parent
Comments about Safety 1st Top Of Door Child Safety Lock And Finger Guard:
The product is easy to install, but as many other reviewers commented, you have to have quite a large gap between your door and the open-side door frame. It fit, but only if we forced it shut; you could tell it would have started to cause damage after a few uses. Back it went!
Beware if you have door trim.....

About Me Parent of Multiples (Twins etc)
Over the last 10 years I have probably bought every type of door guard/lock that there is in an effort to keep my five children out of certain rooms (or in their own rooms at bedtime)and none of them ever seemed to work. I was so excited when I saw this product because it sounded different than the other products on the market. Unfortunately, this lock would not work with ANY door in my house due to my door trim. I gave the lock to a friend (with different door trim) and it did not work with her door trim either. Great concept but only works with certain doors/trim styles and unfortunately you won't discover if you have the "right" door/trim style until after you buy :-(
Great for our Purposes

About Me Parent of Two or More Children
We bought this primarily for our 8 year old special needs child. He was turning on the shower in the bathrooms, so we purchased these to keep him out. They worked so well that we also purchased them for our downstairs bathroom and the office. He is tall for his age, but is still not able to open the door with these locks. They work great for our 4 and 2 year olds as well. I also like that you don't have to drill into your door. Extremely easy install. The only drawback for us is that you can't close the door all the way while these are in place. Other than that, we have been really happy.
Best thing we've bought so far
By Amanda Jean

Our two year old twins have always been one step a head of us when it came to child proofing. Everything we did they figured out how to undo, and nothing was working. We were lucky at first, they hadn't figured out how to climb out of their cribs, but once they did we were spending all of our night putting them back in bed, only to wake up with my husband on the floor and both kids in bed with me. We had finally decided to buy a new door handle and just put the lock on the outside, we weren't crazy about it, but we didn't know what else to do. I had seen this and tried it. And we love it. I tell everyone about it. It's so easy to use, and I feel safe about it. One night we ended up having a fire, and it would have taken us more time to turn the handle than it did to push the button, and my favorite part is that I can still hear them.
Poor Design
By MT Mom

Wish I could give this no stars. I ordered this product despite reading the negative reviews about it not working with most doors. I wanted to use this on the front door in a house I was renting (couldn't do anything permanent). The product is so bulky that a 1/2" or so gap between the door and the door jamb is needed for this to work. The concept is great but the design is poor. I ended up using a door knob cover for my little one. Now that I'm in my own house, I will install a security chain.
Great product with one downfall
By Allie

The product was/is fantastic especially since we move a lot and don't want to drill holes in all the rental houses we are in. It works exactly how advertised. Our son is a little escape artist and can open most anything even with the "child proofing". My ONLY issue was that you couldn't completely close the door, stays open a 1-2 inches.

Wonderful!
By blessed mom of 3 under 3

We use this product on a door that my toddler can open --even with a child proof doorknob cover. The product looks confusing out of the package but ends up being ridiculously simple to use. almost so simple i didn't think it would work. BUT - it works wonderfully with our door moldings (almost 100 yr old house) and is easy to engage/disengage. i will be purchasing more as needed.
Ehhh...

Mother of 5, only worked on my 1 yr. old, my 3yr. old and up were able to open the door no problem. My 3yr. old just pushes hard enough and it the door pushes open. Sending it back.
Great Product!

I first used this product in my toddler's bedroom to eliminate the need for gates at the top of steps at night. It fit wonderfully and has worked great(no escapes,he can't reach it and no smashed fingers!). I purchased one for my parent's house for when we visit there and recently purchased 2 more(for a bathroom and the master bedroom). It didn't fit as well on the bathroom door, I'm guessing from some swelling due to moisture and/or the door needs to be scraped down to even it out. All in all this is THE best safety product(Will be buying this for my cousin and sister-in-law who have upcoming babies!
Best Door Locks Ever

About Me Grandparent
These are a little tricky to get use to, but they install really easily. They can be removed when not in use. They protect children from tumbling down stairs. Also I have French door handles my toddlers can open them so they can escape outside undetected-- not with these locks. They are also designed that if they open the door it will open only a few inches. If they try to close the door again, there is a safety catch so they can not close the door on their fingers. I would highly recommend these locks.
Piece of mind
By Cheyenne
from Brawley, CA
We have these door locks on all our doors in our house. They give us piece of mind that our son won't be able to get into the toilet in the restroom or any other dangerous situations. They are also great because they prevent kids from smashing their fingers in the door. We have custom door moldings in our house so the locks did not fit iniitianly. We had to cut a piece of our molding out to make them fit but it was worth it.
Not for commercial use
By David the Facilities Manager

This product looks like one that makes door safety a breeze with simple installation without drilling holes in your door or frame. This looked like a solution to our situation in our pre-school children's area at the church but, alas, commercial doors are thicker than residential and this safety lock was not usable.I believe the fire code on a public building may be the reason for this difference in door thickness and as I thought would make it impossible to find any product that would lock a door and make a fire marshal happy. If we had residential doors, I'd be using it now and would recommend it but if you are in a commercial situation with thick doors, it won't work. If you're in a commercial situation with residential doors, the fire marshal may not allow it.
Needs some improvement

This is a great invention! I would have loved it and gave it 5 stars nut it dosent fit the molding to my door. I think that this product should have an additional attachment for door moldings that dont catch all the way. It is pretty common for houses to have different moldings.. So they should have a pice of plastic that can be added on to the door frame that have short or rounded edges so that the hook part can properly attach.

Wander keeper

I use this on my bedroom door on overnights stays with my 19 month old grandson. He sleeps on an inflatable toddler bed in my bedroom. This Safety 1st door lock allows me to sleep soundly knowing he will not awaken quietly and find his way into the main house alone. With this lock, I can hear him rattle the door attempting to leave and explore. Toddlers are so unpredictable, no awakening is the same.
LOVE these!!! Must have for toddlers
By Busy mom of three

I was concerned after reading other reviews about decorative door molding, which I have. I thought I would give them a try, and these are WONDERFUL! The only part of the door that has to be squared is the piece of wood that door hits when closed. My twins are just over two and were able to climb out of their cribs, but couldn't get back in. I was going to convert their cribs to toddler beds, and needed a way to keep them in their room. It took me less than 2 minutes to install them and they work great! I am now going to order them for my pantry, garage, and more. These are bigger and heavier than I thought they would be, but don't leave any mark on the door or door frame.
