Presto-chango: that's how quickly this retractable safety gate "disappears!" Just pull it out when you need it, and roll it up when you don't. Don't let the soft mesh fool you; this gate is sturdy enough for stair tops and even outdoor use. Extends up to 55"W x 34"H, so it's taller and wider than other retractable gates (and easier to install and use). Includes two sets of mounting hardware, for twice as much use. One-hand operation. For kids under 2. Dealing with moldings? No problem: add Spacers (sold separately). Works with moldings and baseboards ½ and ¾ inches thick. See Product Details

Good Gate

About Me First Time Parent
Comments about Dream Baby Retractable Gate:
I love how this gate is hidden when not in use. The only problem is that the two surfaces have to be perfectly vertical. Otherwise one half (top or bottom) is tighter and more secure than the other! I am not bothered by the fact that is takes two hands to operate. Would buy again.

Not as good as I'd hoped
By Sarah

I bought this gate for the top of our stairs. My parents have a retractable gate at their house for the grandchildren that I love, and instead of trying to buy that exact one, I went with this one because it was a little cheaper and it looked pretty similar. I don't like it nearly as much. It is really hard to open- I haven't been able to do it one handed, and that will be necessary when our 2nd baby gets here this summer. I also really dislike the loud clicking that the gate makes when it retracts. The gate is about 10 feet from our daughter's room and is just too loud to use while she is sleeping. Since the whole point of the gate for us was to use while my daughter sleeps (in case she gets out of her room in the night- so she won't fall or try to go down the stairs in the dark), I don't think we'll continue to use this. Looks like we will be paying a little more for the gate we should have gotten in the first place!
Decent gate, but had some problems

About Me Parent of Two or More Children
We really liked how the gate practically disappeared when not in use. We placed it in a wide area between our kitchen/DR and the rest of the house. We have a taller than average child so the extra height was important to us. The product worked for a couple months but then 2 things happened. 1) the cat would scoot underneath and that taught my son how to push himself underneath as well 2) the mechanism would become stuck and I could no longer pull the gate out after it had been retracted. We did use the product to near it's widest setting; it might have worked longer otherwise, we do not know. Our son did try to climb over the gate but was not successful with that, but he is persistent and as I said learned how to go under. We installed exactly as directed btw.
Great gate

Happy with the gate. We have an awkward setup at the bottom of our stairs, so this gate worked great for putting it at an angle. The only thing we don't like is it is so loud when opening and closing. It does what we need, it keeps our one year old off the stairs.
Love it

We had a typical gate at the top of our stairs. It made maneuvering quite difficult and when my three year old almost caught her on the latch I decided to try this gate. We love it!!!!

Works well, but can't use one-handed

You can't open or close the gate with just one hand. I wish the "hooks" on the wall were a bit further out from the wall because I'm always scraping my hand along the wall as I try to hook the gate to the hooks. But it does do the trick and that's what matters most. We have a tough staircase to child proof. This gate keeps my child safe and still allows us to open the door of the closet at the top of the stairs. Note that is is loud when it is closing so be sure to retract it before the baby goes to sleep.
Too short the description is wrong
By Emilia
from New York
The instructions say that it's 55" but when it's unrolled it's really only about 52" so it was to short and we had to use it somewhere else. We had to look for another gate. Also it's difficult to hook on you have to hold the roll button and stretch your arms out to hook the gate on the other side. Also my daughter can reach underneath so I have to move anything that she can get to.
okay gate

Our daughter is a climber at not even a year old and she likes to climb this gate. I wish it were a little taller. I feel like this will continue to be as an issue as she grows taller. When she does it begins to tear off the holder. I think we will buy a wooden gate now just because of hat.
Awesome compact gate
By Mom of 3

This is a great gate as it takes up no space at all . Only down side is the clicking sound it makes while opening and closing. We were going to buy a second on for the top of the stairs but thought the sound would wake up the children. It is tall so you really can not walk over it. Overall love it since it is compact and you do no have the obstacle of a gate swinging open. Another bonus is that our 16 month old can not climb on it.

Requires Two Hands
By Disappointed

I actually use this as a pet gate rather than a baby gate. I bought a similar retractable gate from One Step Ahead for my children when they were younger and loved it. Unfortunately, this gate requires two hands to operate while the one I used to have could be managed with one hand. Because I have a wide hallway, I have to really stretch my arms to turn the dial with one hand and release the gate with the other hand. All and all, I am not pleased at all with this gate.
Retractable Gate

We had purchased this product from One Step about 4 years ago and loved it, it had a one bar attachment instead of the upper and lower that is on this one. It is much more difficult to open and close.
Great for unusual area!

This gate worked great at the top of our stairs where we have a wall on one side and a newl post on the other side. I did hate screwing into our solid wood post but it does work to prevent my little guy from falling down the stairs. I did use the spaces that you have to buy separately because I have molding at the bottom on the wall side. Overall, this gate did what we needed. We could not find any other option besides this one to work in our situation.
Great Gate!
By J's Mom

I have very wide stair cases so this gate is perfect for me - I did have to purchase the spacers to get the width I needed though. I love that the gate retracts for when I'm not using it, making it easy to go up and down the stairs (especially when holding my son!). The only thing I don't like is that in order to retract the gate with no sound you need both hands, which sometimes isn't possible. If you use one hand only to twist the knob and then pull the gate of the latch it makes a loud retracting noise. Other than that I'm very happy with the gate.
