We bought an older home and needed a gate for the top of the stairs to keep our 11mnth old in. The other reviews were right... it was not fun to put together. The pictures and wording are not correct for the first part of it so it was a little confusing, but we love it now that it's done. It feels very sturdy and looks as nice as a gate can look.

It is a pretty basic gate to use...I can easily open and close it while holding a baby or laundry and I'm sure a child over 3 could operate it as well.

Installed this gate in two places of our home after considerable trouble installing; only to have the plastic hardware break apart after using just one week. The gate literally fell off of the wall from its flimsy plastic hinges when i opened it.

Fantastic gate when you have stairs at an angle. We were so pleased to have found this and all the other reviews are true...this gate is very difficult to assemble! The directions are not even correct and it took my husband over 6 hours to install it! I would recommend it but with a giant disclaimer about the assembly!

I read the reviews before buying and it seems a lot of people had trouble with assembly. I assembled the gate mostly by myself(my husband helped when we mounted it to the wall and banister). The main trouble was that there were a few parts that were mislabeled in the instructions so it took a little longer to figure out where the pieces went than it should have. The end result was great though and I love the fact that I can use it in our old farmhouse where no other gate would work.

The hardware that came with this was so soft we couldn't drill it into the wall without stripping it. We had to replace all of the screws with better ones from the hardware store, and with anchors since even light use caused them to come dislodged from the wall. Shipped as it is , it is not a good safety gate for the top of the stairs. We chose this because we have a difficult angle at the top of the stairs, but we had to modify it A LOT to make it safe.

I use the gate at the top of my stairs, I have two small grandchildren at my house daily, and this is a real life saver, they both just recently learned to climb the stairs and don't want them to feel the quick way back down

I have had several gates from one step and have really held up well. I do agree with others that the instructions are very hard to follow which then takes more time to install than needed.
One step always has good customer service!

The directions for this gate were very poor and difficult to follow. Once I finally got it installed though it is sturdy and works well.

The directions were hard to follow. You had to flip thru three different pages to get it assembled. Took quite a while just to figure out how to read the directions. Otherwise it works in angled areas great!!!!

If you read all the previous reviews, this is nothing new. The assembly of this product is very difficult and not user-friendly. You have to be mechanically minded to be able to figure out the pieces and directions. Give yourself a good afternoon/evening to put this item together and the pictures are more helpful than the actual instructions. I would not have had the patience/know-how to put this item together on my own; my husband is mechanically sound, so he was able to figure this out, but not without getting a little flustered.
We love that it works in our 100-year-old farm house and looks great.
I would recommend this to a friend as long as part of the gift is my husband to help put it together for them!

We needed to find a gate that would work on our cast iron stairs. We have the cast iron on both sides so we didn't want to screw into it. We bought the gate installation kit to mount it. All that is is a piece of wood and two very big zip ties. Next time I wouldn't waste the money on that part. I could make that myself. The gate works good otherwise. It's back so it matches the cast iron. In keeps our 8 month old from falling down the steps. Our toddler can't even figure out how to open it, so we don't have to worry about the baby.

This works great but we had to add a board to our banister because it was a bit longer then the hinges.

The directions were awful. The written directions were in the front of the book and unclear. The photos were in the back of the book and didn't match with the written directions. The gate works ok but it took longer to put together than it should have.

I read all the reviews for this product and decided that, while it sounded as though construction was difficult, the overall product was really good. My 8 month old just learned to crawl.
Well first of all, my husband took his ENTIRE afternoon off to figure this out and not only were the instructions completely non-friendly or helpful, but there were not really any visual aids in the instructions to demonstrate the process. My husband has a Ph.D, and has worked as a carpenter, and architect--he's not dumb around the house. But he stated these directions were absurd. Once he did finally get some of the gate together, it was so flimsy, it kept breaking apart in the middle when he barely pushed on it. He took it apart and put it back together several times,
I am very disappointed because i wanted to believe that this product had been made thoughtfully, as One Step Ahead states all of their products are. NOT happy. And NOW, i have to PAY for giant shipping whereas I didn't before, for something I'm returning.

We bought two of these gates to put on our stairs. The picture in the advertisement shows the same kind of banister we have. Unfortunately, the white stair posts at our house do not line up evenly, so the gat would not install properly. Check your stair banister first before buying! My husband ended up installing one of the gates at the top of the stairs between to walls instead. It works great, and is very sturdy. He didn't have difficulty with the instructions, but I can see why some people might. Bottom line, this is a GREAT gate - just be sure that the area in which you will install it will work first!
