Horrible! Don't waste your money

Comments about One Step Ahead Clear Banister Guard Kit For Kids Safety 5 Ft:
Looks terrible. All it is is heavy plastic...it looked messy, wrinkled and cheap. Plus it wasn't clear even with the film removed (which was soooooo hard to remove in one piece). Save your money. Go to a home improvement store and buy a piece of plexiglass, drill some holes and install quickly. It is rigid and clear and is almost invisible. Safer too because baby cant rip it.
Can't install as intended.

About Me Grandparent
The ties are fine for small risers as shown in photo but were too short for mine requiring purchase of 14 inchers. The hole punch which is small and made of thin pressed steel made in China broke on 7th hole. The 2nd punch (I bought 2) didn't fare as well requiring me to search for a heavy duty punch; not easy and another expense. There is no excuse for including a punch that won't work with the plastic used!

Totally worth it but took time to put up

About Me First Time Parent
I read previous reviews and was skeptical about purchasing this product but I needed something that was perfectly clear for the railings in our loft since we have made that a play room. My husband refused to put something up that was noticeable and this was the perfect solution. It took a while to put up because I tried numerous ways to get it to fit just right and our banisters turn at right angles in multiple spots. Our railings are shorter than the actual guard, so I cut it short lengthwise and found that weaving it between the railings was the best way it would fit without needing to punch too many holes. It also made it very flush to the railing and pretty much invisible. It is very study and very safe for my 1 1/2 year old daughter. It took a while to put up (more specifically because of the way our house is) but was definitely worth it if you need something very esthetic.

Great product!

This product was easy to install. We installed 3 boxes worth in an afternoon. It prevents our 13 month old from falling through the extra wide slats in our railings (multi-level home). You just punch a few holes and thread the zip ties through...easy as that.

Awful!!
By Chrissy

So disappointing! It's just a flimsy piece of plastic and you hole punch holes in it and put zip cords through the holes and tie around the banister. The plastic cracks near the holes and it's difficult to line up the holes. Doesn't seem sturdy at all, the plastic is thin and flimsy
I would buy this product

Installation is challenging process. Toddlers can easily move this panel up and down on the banister. However it works for us because the main purpose was to prevent toys from falling down.
Had for 5 years and still holding strong

We bought this product 5 years ago to keep our son from crawling in between the banisters above our staircase. It does a great job and has held up to a lot of abuse. After 5 years it is still standing and in good shape! :) My husband had no problem installing it. The only downfall is that the kids like to bang on it to make noise...such is life! :)

Don't waste your money!!!!!!!
By H2O Bob

Don't waste your money on this "product". I call it a "product" because its's really just a bunch of items you could buy independently and thrown in a box with crummy instructions. The installation is extremely awkward. This is a complete DIY project, which wouldn't be terrible except the plastic is cheap - if you bend it it will split creating sharp dangerous edges and it also splits from the holes that you install the zip ties in. Additionally it is virtually impossible to install flat flush with the banister. Also when you have completed the installation there is clear cellophane type protective cover you can pull off the plastic sheet, but when you pull it off it tears at every zip tie and leaves little plastic bits that can then be hazardous to little children if eaten. I just wasted too much time installing this piece of garbage and am very disappointed. With the sharp splits in the plastic sheet I feel this is more dangerous than having the open bannisters. I am probably now going to waste more time taking this thing down and putting up a mesh bannister guard or some other option. I'd give this 1/2 a star or 0 stars if I could.
Does the job

We bought this to keep our kids (3 & 10 months) from getting arms and legs twisted in the banister. It certainly does that well. Very easy install. Even better, it keeps my kids from throwing toys downstairs do they quickly learned and have lost interest in that area of the stairs. It isn't the most attractive item but it's not horrible looking and since it's clear isn't quickly noticeable. It's flexible so was easy to wrap around a corner too. All in all a great find for our needs.

We wanted to child proof our stair railing, however, this product left the stairs feeling closed in, and was very hard to install. We did not like the ties showing, and felt it looked unprofessional. We were very disappointed in the outcome.
Some protection, not as sturdy as hoped
By NE Mom

We installed the product on a railing around a staircase--the railing borders our living room and dining room, so it's a heavy-traffic area. Our child is just starting to crawl, so it seems strong enough to do the job of preventing children from working themselves through a railing with wide-spaced spindles (which we have) or throwing toys down (which used to happen). However, installation is difficult, and it's not a strong as we hoped. The hole punch DID punch the plastic for us, but this worked well only on the ends and the top. At the bottom, we ended up creasing the plastic several times, which leaves large white marks. Also, the plastic tore in several places when we hole punched it (before installing any ties), so we question the sturdiness. When we used a drill (the hole punch only reaches so far), it left sharp edges. If you do purchase this--I'm not aware of a better solution--plan ahead and buy any additional, longer zip ties you may need before starting to install (we had to make two trips to the hardware store). We used longer zip ties to make it around the end post (medium length and then a longer size for the bottom of the post), as we chose not to drill into the post. Also, if you hole punch, heed the warnings about picking up all the plastic circles punched--we tried to be careful but our child kept finding them on the floor (obviously a hazard). Next time I'd dispose of them one at a time so I'd know we found them all, since they are almost invisible. Finally, it is difficult to make the product really lie flat. Installation is a two-person job, as the roll of plastic was hard to manage. Reasonably satisfied with performance so far, and definitely feel a lot safer about our railing, but I wonder how it will hold up to a toddler.
Buy duck tape
By Smoochie's Mama

We needed to make sure our daughter would not try to slip thru the banister. This product was our best choice. Flimsy construction, the material will tear along the areas that are hole punched. The only feesible way to prevent this is the reinforce the borders with a duck tape seam. This makes using the hole punch difficult, but ultimately this was our best option. It was also helpful to unroll this and re- roll in the opposite direction, this made the plastic easier to install.
Serves the purpose
By Beenie

This product is OK. It serves the purpose of advertised use, but I will warn you, It is not completely clear and is quite unattractive. The material itself seems kinda of cheesy and the hole punch it came with does not work well I just drilled the holes. But overall it has worked.
Works like a charm!!

We purchased this to use on the banister at our vacation condo!! We have 5 grandkids under the age of 5 and any one of them could have easily slipped through the banister and fallen to the next floor. It is very secure once installed properly! It gives us great peace of mind! However, the hole punch that came with the product was useless...we used a drill!

About Me Parent of Multiples (Twins etc)
This is a MUST HAVE for anyone with a banister and railings! I had purchase this back when my daughter was a baby almost seventeen years ago and todays design is much easier to assemble! If you have a little one/s this is a great product. I have piece of mind, knowing my boys can't get hurt between the railings, fall through, or throw things downstairs so to hurt anyone else! They are very active 15 mo. olds and are into everything...except the railings!
