Gates arrived and were simple to assemble and install. After ordering the gates I suggested them to a friend and noticed a price reduction from the time I had place the order a week earlier. I called customer service and spoke with Jannette who was awesome and gave me some suggestions on the gates and processed a refund for the difference in price to my credit card. I will order from one step ahead in the future, they are a pleasure to work with.

I purchased two of these for adjacent hallways in my home. They are very stylish and match the traditional style of the trim in my home. Installing them is relatively simple, if you're patient and have good deductive reasoning skills. As with most everything else that requires assembly these days, the directions could be clearer, but once figured out, they make perfect sense. My only complaint is the locking/unlocking mechanism. This gate doesn't latch on its' own. You must lift the catches, thereby lifting the entire gate, into the keepers. If you don't get the keepers exactly in line with the catches, this is impossible. Pay close attention when you install the cathes that they line up. Otherwise, very pleased.

We bought the One Step Ahead furniture gates back in May 2010 and LOVED them. They were high quality and the dark oak color matched our railings in the house perfectly. We ordered these thinking they were the same gates but there is less detail on the railings and they attach to the wall using different hardware. The color is my biggest problem though - we ordered dark oak and the gates are actually expresso, almost black, in color. The color looks nothing like it does online. I feel completely disappointed and will now get to go through a return process and try to find gates elsewhere :-(

Be prepared to use some common sense and know the basics of physics to install this. Poor directions. If you can use basic hand tools and have any common sense you can install this yourself. If you have trouble finding your car keys everyday, don't try to install this yourself. If you have a Masters degree don't try to install this yourself.
Once installed, looks good, works good. Solid.
I'm a grandparent and installed two of these.

I have a 50" opening. When stretched that far it is very flexibke not very sturdy. My husband had to reinforce gate to safely use. Latch is very hard to use glad it is in an opening I don't use very offen. Over all construction not bad however not suited for full extension

Purchased this to install at the top of our stairway so our dogs would stay in their play room when we weren't home. We purchased this gate because it looked well made (which it is) and because it matched the color of our hardwood floors. It was very difficult to assemble this gate. From how to attach the two separate pieces to the actual mounting onto the wall the instructions were a little confusing. We determined that the gate was bigger than we needed for the space we were going to install it to so we returned it and received a full refund minus shipping.

Very pretty gate. Straight forward design, easy to use. However, installation instructions are very poor. You need to figure out the installation for yourself. So many other reviewers have said the same thing. Why hasn't the manufacturer made this simple change???

We use this gate for to keep our two Dobermans out of the family room when we are not home. The gate is beautiful (we have two) and strong.

The gate is used to keep our dog from going downstairs. Like many reviewers the main problem is missing hardware! A trip to the hardware store to purchase $.50 worth of screws fixed the problem.

Just had it installed. Seems sturdy, looks great. Had a handyman install it and he had difficulty doing it. The instructions it comes with apparently didn't make sense. I had read this on reviews before so I got the updated instructions from online. Those helped him only to a point, and then he had to figure out the rest on his own. (He was a very experienced handyman). He also had to install it farther off the ground than it says you are supposed to because he couldn't install it on the baseboard. I think if my husband had tried to install it, we would have given up and returned it. But now that it's installed, we are very happy with it.

We have this gate extened to its max (52 inches) seperating our foyer/stair area and the kitchen. The construction and hardware provided are outstanding and the it's incredibly sturdy for a swing gate of it's size. It's very attractive and matches well with our hardwood floors. We looked at a ton of different gates and the construction and attractiveness of this gate is second to none.

My wife and I bought 4x gates and 8x gate installation kits for the two staircases in our house. When I attempted to install the 1st gate at the top of our staircase is when I ran into trouble. The instructions were worthless for both the gate and the two gate installation kits. I found the updated instructions online, which were helpful and slightly decreased the irritation until I began drilling/screwing. The drill holes recommended by the instructions were too small to work as pilot holes, so the screws were very difficult to screw in by hand. After correcting this by drilling larger holes, I had a screw snap in half while HAND screwing it in. I drilled another hole and tried again (because the broken screw was lodged in the wood), but the same thing happened. Finally, I tried one of my screws from my toolbox that worked fine. Next, while trying to screw in another screw the head completely threaded and I was unable to get it out without a hammer and pliers.On top of purchasing these gates, expect to end up spending more money at [@] to buy screws not made of aluminum. Also, save yourself some money and do not buy the installation kit. Just buy a 3/4inch thick piece of wood wide enough to mount the gate apparatus and cut it yourself.

We bought two of these to keep our grandchildren either downstairs or up. Both are working well, but they were a bear to install. The template has arrows, but no indication of 'up' or 'down'. Needless to say, I chose up when I should have chosen down. A little more explanation of how to install would be helpfu.

The gate is very strong all wood construction. It is very appealing and matches our hardwood floors. We were in the middle of installing the gate and had to stop and go to the hardware store. 4 of the 1 1/2 inch screws were not included. Otherwise a perfect buy.
