We thought this was a great product, on paper, but when we installed it at the bottom of our stairs on the metal iron posts with our gate, it worked for about 3 days, then we noticed it was loose and the gate did not close well. After looking closer at it, the whole banister was loose and it costs us plenty to fix it. There was too much play in the wood and zip tie. The price is cheap but so it the product. Go with the velcro ones if you can fit it. We are now looking for another option for the bottom of the stairs.

All this is is a stick and two zip ties. [...] Instead of ripping people off with this product, why doesn't One Step Ahead have a suggestions/solutions page with helpful hints for parents, such as how to make one of these yourself? That would have been more helpful to me.

This product does not attach very well. It has too much play in it and allows the gate to slide around...no matter how tight you pull it.

We used one for each gate at the bottom and top of our staircase. It works with different sized ballisters, even tapered ones. They work well with our two different gates and I love that the railing isn't damaged to install the gate. It makes it so much easier and safer to install and use the gates.

The screws are to soft and easily strip. Also the "rip-ties" are not sturdy enough to keep the boards from sliding. Concept is good, but materials provided could have been thought out a little better.

I was able to install this product fast and easily. The ties were also easy to release and adjust. It looked very basic for the money when I opened it, but it was nice to have all the pieces handy and in one place.

This wood strip is useful. But, for the price, it should come finished the same as the gate (white, if gate is white, stained if gate is stained, etc.).
The only benefit is that it is sanded.
Also it has no attachment hardware. You are on your own for that.

You would be better off doing it yourself.

Seems like a great product, especially for the price, but will not work with my staircase because my banister and staircase are curved, not straight. I have not found a product yet that I can use to block the bottom of my stairs, despite about a dozen attempts at different products. If you have a unique shape to your staircase... good luck baby-proofing!

I used two of these for the bottom and top of my stairs and on both occasions I ended up having to drill into the bannister anyway. For safety purposes, the wood should be thicker (which would also prevent ruining the bannister). Why include two inch screws when the wood is only an inch thick?? For this much money, I could have gone to[...]and bought a piece of wood that was thicker. It should also have staining options. (I did it myself.) I'm not going to spend all kinds of money for a furniture gate to blend with my house to have a cheap piece of wood stick out like a sore thumb.

This item will be returned. We needed it for the banister conversion. The only pieces needed out of the kit is a 1 inch X 1.5 inch piece of wood the height of the banister and 2 zip ties. We intend on purchasing wood at a home improvement store, staining it to match our wood and then using zip ties. Once we purchase actual oak to match our banister I think it will still be cheaper than the cost of the kit.
